More evidence needed to ban Islam4UK

As the fallout continues from Islamist extremist Anjem Choudary’s plans to hold a march through Wootton Bassett, demands are being made to ban not only the march but Choudary’s Islam4UK outfit itself, with yesterday’s Guardian reporting Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling’s call to “ban the organisation”.

Terrorism-Act-2000There are currently 45 proscribed organisations under the terms of the Terrorism Act (2000), which states (p. 2, Ch. 11, Part II, Sec. 3.5) that an organisation is considered to be “concerned in terrorism” if it:

(a) commits or participates in acts of terrorism,
(b) prepares for terrorism,
(c) promotes or encourages terrorism, or
(d) is otherwise concerned in terrorism

What is Islam4UK?

Islam4UK is a web-based organisation that describes itself as “a platform” for the extremist group Al Muhajiroun, which has been banned in Britain.

Among its founders are the militant preacher Omar Bakri Mohammed – who is living in exile in Lebanon – and former solicitor Anjem Choudary, who both played a part in Al Muhajiroun.

Bakri, who inspired the fertiliser bomb terrorist Omar Khyam, helped organise a seminar after the September 11 attacks in favour of the “Magnificent 19″ and went on to call the July 7 bombers the “Fantastic Four”. He and Mr Choudary were also behind the protests against the controversial Danish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

It is reported by the BBC yesterday that the Islamic Group Islam4UK propose to march through the streets of Wootton Bassett in protest at the way this remarkable town and its inhabitants mark the passing through of our war dead, on route home from far flung parts of the world including and mainly Afghanistan to their final rest. While I support the right of all British people to make peaceable protests about almost any subject under the sun I cannot in any way support this proposed march or allow it to proceed. When I speak of the British People I am of course refering to all those people of whatever race, religion, political view etc who support British values and the British way of life. It is clear to me that members of this organisation do not hold the same view, however I support their right, however mistaken, to try by peaceable means in appropriate ways to seek to bring about change, this proposed march however is certainly not appropriate.

Islamic group plans Wootton march

An Islamic group said to have links to an extremist movement is planning to march through the Wiltshire town of Wootton Bassett.

The town has become famous for honouring British war dead returning from Afghanistan.

Islam4UK pledged the protest would be peaceful with symbolic coffins representing Muslim victims.

Wootton’s former mayor Chris Wannell has called on the group’s leader not to hold the march.

‘Brutal crusade’

North Wiltshire MP James Gray said: “I’ve seen in the past assorted groups threaten to march, but they don’t actually do it.

“I wouldn’t think they’d get permission from the police.”
